Our magazine
talks about four specific issues that fall under the topic of “Mental Illness”. While it isn't a
very specific topic and there are a lot of subjects that fall under this umbrella, each author focused on a specific part of mental illness that we wanted to bring awareness to. Kimberly researched drug addiction. Hannah decided to focus on Autism and the struggles involved. Jason looked within himself and used his own struggles with mental illness and the VA system to create his papers. Deanna wanted to bring attention to more than one specific topic but tried to connect them through the problem of mental illness stigma. These issues are each the authors' own. We wanted to make known the
hardships that are hidden or harder to find with mental illness. As a result,
each of us put together a report, profile, and commentary for our own
individual topics. We also each created a visual interpretation of one of those papers. We hope that after reading our online magazine you can find a sense of compassion for the sufferers and a sort of injustice for the uphill battle that those with mental illness face on a daily basis.
Writing and researching about mental illness was an eye-opener for us all. While Deanna and Jason have lived the system and had a more than basic knowledge, we still were able to find numbers that shocked us both. Kimberly and Hannah were appalled at the treatment and judgment faced by those fighting drug addiction and those facing the reality of autism. Overall, we feel we have put together a magazine with solid research and writing. We hope you learn as much from our magazine as we learned putting it together.
